The Cultural Heart of Brazil
|
|
The largest city in the southern hemisphere, São Paulo’s estimated 20 million paulistanos spend their days shopping and trekking the city’s attractions, and their nights partying like there’s no tomorrow.
Shopping in the sixth largest metropolis in the world is a multi-day affair. Brazilian fashions and international brands dominate the Jardins neighborhood. In Centro, market stalls and malls offer bargains, gifts, and Brazilian collectibles.
Founded in 1554 by Jesuits, São Paulo is laden with cultural history. A railroad boom in the early 20th century drew immigrants from all over the world and launched the most culturally diverse city in Brazil into the lead as the country’s industrial and commercial center.
The results of that cultural explosion can be seen in the many galleries and museums across the city, including the raised galleries of Museu de Arte de São Paulo, where Van Goghs mingle with El Grecos. Parca da Luz hosts the Pinacoteca do Estado, where Brazilian artists dominate the walls.
With multi-lane highways laid across the heart of the city, cheap taxis, and two major railways, switching gears from art museums to dance clubs is a breeze. Paulistas don’t even sit down to dine until 9 in the evening, and the clubs and bars start hopping well after.
Cuisine includes renowned Brazilian beef across the city. Liberdade boasts a selection of fine sushi and Japanese menus. Higienópolis offers a fine selection of French fare. While two Italian restaurants juxtaposed on opposite corners in Centro cater to the high and low priced crowds with world class fares.
Delightful formal evenings can be found in the Sala São Paulo’s wood interior, where symphony and dance performances are held. Vila Madalena offers low-key wine bars and restaurants. Younger crowds flock south of Jardins, into Vila Olímpia, where clubs offer all-night dance experiences.
São Paulo may no longer be the capital of Brazil, but it remains the cultural heart of this beautiful South American country.
